Suppose you paint with the idea of creating a masterpiece resulting in fame, sexual favors à la carte for the rest of your life, glamour, a truck load of Bolivian marching powder and more money that a member of the Saudi Royal family.
You will feel.
Great art never comes from that place.
Masterpieces are created by being the humble messenger of the art inside us that is dying to break out.
Those two approaches to creating cannot be more different.
It’s also always immediately obvious what type of creator you are dealing with. Are they creating art to earn their place in the spotlight or are they creating art because the art bursts out of them?
The easiest test for this:
Would you still be creating this if you knew you were the last person on earth and nobody would ever get to see the result?
If yes, then you are on the right track.
