Today, the 9th of March, 2018, at 17.00, Slovaks will march against corruption in Bratislava, but in many cities across the country. Even in other countries there will be protests to highlight the shady stuff that goes on in this country. The Slovak government could have featured in an HBO series about the new maffia, but they are not very entertaining, they’re just corrupt, megalomaniac, and dangerous, otherwise they are colorless and lack all charisma.

In a country like Slovakia they can do whatever the fuck they want, because, as one of my students said this week: ‘As long as a Slovak has a good job, he won’t lift a finger to change anything’.

Perhaps this mentality is changing. Last Friday 25.000 people marched in the streets of Bratislava.

Do you want to know the silly reason why not many more people marched?

Because on Friday lots of Slovaks leave Bratislava, they go back to the villages, mostly to the North and to the East.

This time the march was announced well in advanced, so hopefully, many Slovaks cancelled their usual exodus out of their capital to the ‘real’ Slovakia (the villages and the mountains) to fight for a better government.

If all Slovaks who like to complain about what goes on in this country would actually go to the marches, something might change.

If you’re reading this and you’re in Slovakia, and you are not ok with corruption, join the protest. Do like the organizers of the march: don’t do the dishes today and eat pasta with ketchup if needs be, but go.

It would be sad if Jan has died for nothing.
