The tidal wave of motivational speakers, public speakers, coaches, gurus, etc, all sponsored by underpaid Asian workers who do the actual producing, while the spoiled west takes to social media to try and make money repeating the same self-help mantras you’ve heard a million times over. The tiny minority that is really succesful at it, meaning that they make a living out of it, have the same effect of a small dose of speed. That’s pretty much all it is. You can become addicted to motivational gurus. They put you in a state of excitement -the best ones, at least- and for a moment you feel like you can take on the world.
Wanna get stuff done?
There’s one golden rule. Stop listening to podcasts, YouTube blablaba, set a clear goal and DO SOME ACTUAL WORK, CUT OUT ALL THE NOISE AND DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO REALIZE YOUR GOAL, LEARNING FROM YOUR MISTAKES AS YOU GO ALONG.
That’s all.
Nobody can walk that road for you.
It’s how we started getting results, with our school, our publishing house and this website, if it didn’t involve work that got shit done, we just stopped doing it. It’s amazing how much time wasting crap you can eliminate if you adopt this rule. Doesn’t lead to results in support of your goal? Stop doing it immediately, just stop and do something that does support your goal. You do not need massive amounts of motivational noise to get that habit. You get that habit by doing, not by consuming someone’s else ‘success strategy’…
After literally thousands of hours listening and reading motivational stuff we had to come to the conclusion that there was no secret, there was no magic formula. It’s just this: be sure of the direction you want to go in and WORK YOUR ASS OFF, ignoring everything and everyone that doesn’t point in the direction you have decided upon.
We stopped listening to motivational speakers broadcasting from their mother’s basement and put our procrastinating nose to the damned grindstone.
Try it. Switch of the noise. Let this be the last ‘motivational’ article you ever expose yourself to.
GO
GET
SOME
WORK
DONE
THERE’S NOTHING A MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER CAN TELL YOU THAT CAN REPLACE WORKING ON YOUR PROJECT, whatever it may be.
“You can become addicted to motivational gurus. They put you in a state of excitement -the best ones, at least- and for a moment you feel like you can take on the world.”
Yup.
I stopped listening to these folks a long time ago and followed my own path – after all, nothing is more genuine than one’s own experiences… both failures and successes.
On the flip side, though, the idea of leadership training being a commercial venture provided a wonderful opening to my paper on the Second World War submarine skippers… So… I guess there is a good side to it all… 🙂

It’s a bit long – this was my BA thesis (https://milsurpwriter.wordpress.com/2017/06/26/influences-of-interwar-doctrine-and-training-on-the-successes-of-u-s-submarines-in-the-pacific-theater-of-operations-during-the-second-world-war/?preview=true).
A quick summary of it:
I have always been fascinated with the exploits of American subs during the Second World War, but at some point the question came up: how did the skippers become who they were?
As you have pointed out, motivational material and speakers have proliferated. However, many great leaders of the past had no exposure to such stuff. Rather than complicating the process of development (often for financial gain rather than benevolence), perhaps looking back at how greatness often had origins in simplicity, experimentation, and action.

I enjoyed reading your post. I agree with you. What I get is determine the direction you want to go and get going and work, work, work even when it hurts. I totally agree; but I’ ll moderate a little. Motivation can still help along the way. So rather than just throw it off I would suggest wise use of motivation. Motivation, when it’s well done, is encouragement. I know encouragement can lead people to do wonders. So I agree with you a very good distance of the way, but my feet are weak just before the end of the journey so I stop there.
