Neo-Confederates keep defending the Confederacy. The Confederacy was a state that only came into being because in 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected. He did not threaten slavery where it existed, but he did say he would not allow slavery to expand into new territories. This was enough for 11 states to try and withdraw from the Union and form their own nation. The supporters of the Confederacy to this day claim that their motivation was something different (the vague idea of ‘states rights’ for example) and that they were right to secede.

The most simplistic argument in favor of the Confederacy I’ve ever come across is this:

General-Beauregard-Quote“The fact that one army was fighting for union and the other for disunion is a political expression; the actual fact on the battlefield, in the face of cannon and musket, was that the Federal troops came as invaders and the Southern troops stood as defenders of their homes and further than this we need not go.”, Confederate general Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard

Now imagine one of Hitler’s best officers saying something similar:

“The fact that one army was fighting to liberate people from oppression and the other for Hitler is a political expression; the actual fact on the battlefield, in the face of cannon and rifle, was that anno 1944/1945 the allied troops came as invaders and the German troops stood as defenders of their homes and further than this we need not go.”

I think it’s becomes painfully clear how absurd it is to claim that the invaders are always wrong…
