I watched some youtube videos, Bruno’s selection. One was a guy traveling. You learn just about nothing, but he’s pleasant to look at and listen to, it s all easy to absorb, there’s just enough surprise to keep wondering what will be next and you see the guy eat on airplanes a lot. Very well made pleasant vapidness with a level of editing of editing I can’t hit by even 0,5 percent.
Then two kids going through the mall and one has to pay for everyth the other one wants, bills running up to 8000 dollars until even a tesla cybertruck is bought (possibly a real purchase, not sure).
They eat insane amounts of food and order tons. I believe one cashier had actually a genuine reaction of shock to one order of a burger with 8 patties plus more, a total of about 160 dollars at burger king for two children.
It is astonishing how well made this stuff is and how the money spent in the video is still a fraction of what the video made (which I explained to Bruno).
Bizarrely Bruno tells me kids like that shouldn’t have so much money and shouldn’t have YouTube channels. An opinion I never said out loud, so he can’t be copying me there.
Am actually too awe struck at the sheer professionality to condemn this too loudly.
It IS morally repulsive and I shudder to think what impact this has on our society.
I tell Bruno none of this is normal and it’ s a clever business model, but not something common. Most adults, let alone kids, can’t walk into a mall and buy whatever their friend tells them to buy.
Am remarkably confident to conclude, while observing him, that Bruno already sees through this bullshit and I don’t want to turn this content into forbidden fruit.
Where I comment with abundant acid is when youtubers make screaming their sole schtick. I hate shallow overperformed hysterics viscerally.
So every single day, not just with YouTube videos my son watches, the vibe of our modern times fragments me.
I really do admire the flashy editing. It must be tricky and I know I wouldn’t have the patience for it. I admire the cunning in coming up with concepts that are so good at hooking viewers.
‘Yes day’ >>> I have to buy everything my friend tells me to buy or our viewers can decide how I will be punished is genius if the goal is to get money through catching people’s eye balls and engagement.
Am also reeling from so much polished, glammy, fast fired images about nothing at all other than opportunities to plug brands.
What could be done with all this talent creativity, energy and such a well oiled production machine to educate people or rally people around some collective mission to improve things for all of us? Or does all this almost automatically make it unprofitable?
Shallow >>> profitable.
Deep >>> beg for money, cause it won’t generate money like the flashy shallow stuff about milkshakes and cybertrucks.
I was trained for long form reasoning my entire life.
With the false promise that getting ever better at producing and processing complex thoughts, languages, arguments etc would for sure lead to both money and prestige.
Every day I wake up in a world where the very opposite is true.
I have no plans to become a bitter old man screaming that the kids should be reading Dostojevski instead of buying a whole lot of expensive collector Lego boxes on camera with half fake, half real enthusiasm.
Am saying – and you can totally judge me, I judge myself for it too – I want to adapt and incorporate this new wave of enterpreneurship (if that’s the right word) into my own life.
It’s just to easy to point at these trends and feel somehow exalted.
These kids are outperforming me by almost any metric except factual knowledge on several topics.
But in today’s environment they beat the crap out of me economically.
As Rocco likes to say: Am cooked.
So how do I learn some of this shit?
