Unlike Trump who switches goals every 5 seconds, Grant bit down hard and chased his opponent, Lee, like a bulldog, knowing full well that it might take time, but that staying the course would pay off, even when he got tons of criticism for battering Lee’s army relentlessly.
Also unlike Trump he never once verbally humiliated the enemy, but recognized how gallantly the enemies of the Union had fought.
His attitude did much to heal the wounds of the nation at least somewhat, even though it’s a myth that after the seceding states were brought back into the flock things were suddenly all peaceful and harmonious.
Also, Grant, unlike Trump, wrote his own memoirs. Even while already dying of cancer, he produced one of the most readible memoirs to come out of the American Civil War.
