The vicious cycle of IDF suicides
If they talk about what they have seen, with a little too much sadness, their family on the home front is bothered. Only tales of glory are allowed, nothing that could say the war was not a lovely and grand and justified affair. Mothers tell broken down sons and daughters that they should stop whining and be grateful they got to ‘defend’ the nation. Israel sends out its boys & girls to blow up children, but if they’re a little shaken afterwards, they are told to suck it up. They unravel in different scenarios, the vast majority choose some form of continuation of horror, some fall into addiction, destroy relationships, some flee into more madness and become the most fantatical settlers seeking more death and some go for suicide.
Israel is a tiny society and its nerves are its uniformed. Each suicide sends a signal to thousands of people that something ain’t right. But Israeli mentality being Israeli mentaIity, most choose to double down harder on denial, superiority complexes masked as eternal victimhood and Israeli mythmaking, Israeli society is never rooted in reality.
This then creates a climate that makes it even harder for other uniformed Israelis to process the full weight of what they did, creating more individuals who become useless to Israeli society (passive withdrawal, depressed dysfunction) or become a hazard, taking actions that push Israel into more violence. Only a few manage to process their experience correctly, which then makes them critics of Israel or makes them disconnect from Israel and build something new. But that’s the smallest group.
Note that I don’t call them soldiers, since soldiers fight other soldiers, not civilian populations and family homes.
