While Palestinians showed us how to remain dignified in the face of adversity, Israeli society showed us how humans can be consumed by hatred and can degrade themselves while trying to degrade others. Palestinians in Israeli captivity are sexually harassed, almost always have some of their bones broken at some point, have their rib cage damaged and every day they are stressed with tight rules and regulations that make no sense, other than to remind them every second of the day that they are not free.
They are exposed to a regime of psychological terror that involves keeping them separated from their loved ones and threats to their family. Not only the jailors treat the prisoners harshly. We have seen how Israeli social media accounts and non-Israeli fans of Israel fantasize out loud as to what should be done to them.
They also assume that everything that is being done to Palestinian prisoners is automatically being done by Hamas to Israeli hostages, but we have all seen this is not the case. Israeli social media is so exasperated by this that they have to start imagining, probably with a lot of pleasure, that the released female prisoners were all impregnated by Hamas and gave birth to babies which are now being held to pressure them into saying kind words about Hamas.
This says nothing at all about Hamas, but reveals how Israeli society thinks and how violence, especially sexual violence, is always on their mind. These statements never get push back from other Israelis, allowing this kind of perverted arousing fantasies born out of hatred to spread and to become real in their actual treatment of Palestinians. It’s highly unusual that so many citizens of a country engage in the most outrageous violent fantasies.
Maybe one could compare it to how Americans cooked up the most violent image of Native Americans in the 19th century and derived pleasure out of scaring and shocking friends and family with tales of savagery. It’s almost like a torture mentality has spread far and wide in Israeli society. By assuming Hamas thinks and acts like they would like to act, they only reveal to us how low they have sunk and how they have stripped themselves of all dignity with the whole world watching.
No wonder there has been an outpour of sympathy for the plight of the Palestinians and condemnation of Israeli actions all over the world. The unhinged, arrogant hatred within Israeli society will eventually consume not the Palestinians, but Israeli society itself.
