I couldn’t care less who becomes the next president of the US, nobody who could bring about real change would ever be allowed a serious shot at the White House now. But watching this soap opera unfold gives you a front row seat to how the most dangerous humans operate. The most dangerous people aren’t in your face criminals, they are the people who take advantage of a corrupt death and poverty machine and have themselves embraced by the world’s media as well-meaning, inspiring and charismatic individuals.

Some of the most power hungry people are drawn to playing an active role in US politics. You get to see people lie in almost every statement they make and get away with it. Journalists are too enthralled, too spoilt, too cut off from the realties of the bottom 50 millions of Americans, too hungry for book deals, cushy jobs, invitations to cool parties and access to big names to really hold their feet to the fire. It’s really a self-sustaining club and the animosity between Republicans and Democrats is as much for show as between professional wrestlers. Dems and Reps need each other. It’s a spectacle, a feel good show and it’s in a way marvelous how Americans raised by Oprah keep falling for all the hollow symbolism.

On some level it nauseates me, but on some other level I have a weird admiration for the mostly flawless theatrics of it. I’ve just seen Nancy Pelosi say with a straight face: ‘Time is running short. Biden should do what he wants. He is beloved.’ Why add that time is running out if you want him to stay in the race? Why say he is beloved? In this context it’s the same as saying: I like the guy, but yeah, he’s a disaster. Joe Biden is not beloved. Fellow democrats do not love this man. I doubt there’s much genuine love between Dems in general. Biden has a granddaughter he hasn’t even recognized.

There is nothing to love about Joe Biden. With all the money in the world he is not even taking care of the daughter his son has with a woman he ran out on and generally treated in a toxic way. The woman in question keeps describing shitty things he did to her, but how she understands him so well. A match made in co-dependency heaven apparently and perhaps she doesn’t want to smear him to keep the door open to her daughter becoming recognized as a Biden.

All in all, this is fine entertainment. You have high ranking politicians selected out of a population of more than 330,000,000 people, who nobody truly likes, who nobody would argue are the most competent, or the most well-versed, or the most original, or the most caring or even the most hard-working people you could find in the US and somehow they are there, these mediocre individuals get there, all the way to the top, merely because they want it so much and know what to say and do to get the donations from the people and organisations that really call the shots.

Nobody claims Biden or Trump have factual knowledge of just about anything, but they both got to be presidents of the most powerful country on earth (sharply declining now). You got to be awed by what mediocrity can achieve if it’s linked to burning ambition and a moral emptiness that allows you to say whatever may get you there.

In the end both Trump and Biden are like less intelligent, less creative, less intellectually cultivated, but even more ambitious and more openly narcissistic versions of  Albert Speer. The top nazi who got away with it.
